training has important purposes

I just finished a really powerful book about a Navy SEAL who fought against the Taliban with tremendous valor & courage.  The book was somewhat of an autobiography & was very engaging.  Since finishing, I’ve become reflective on some of the lessons that I’m taking away from this read.  Perhaps the strongest lesson to me relates to the astounding training that this man endured to become a SEAL & how his training was a fundamental essential to surviving an attack of massive proportions, enduring beyond the pain of horrific injuries and persisting past a level of mental distress that defies description.

Truly, the training of this man occured over many years, but his training through these years put him in a position to survive a virtual living hell over the course of 5 days.  The training was difficult with no shadow of a doubt but his training positioned him to survive.  Sometimes I think we go through difficult things so that we will be ready to not just survive, but to even thrive when we are enduring tremendous hardships.

I like what Paul says in 1 Tim 4:8 for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.  Let’s consider difficulties, hardships & struggles to be the training process that will yield benefits that far surpass our current understanding 🙂

  1. Wow! Hardship as training. When we are trained to endure hardship the whole life is better. The lows are less low and the high points are higher because we learn to minimize the misery though time in training with God. So, the harsh times serve as training to make us better Great thought!
