what is impossible?

Sometimes it seems like my life is filled with  impossibilities   – things I want to accomplish, but they seem almost stupid to consider because of the difficulties associated with these things.  One of these things is my dream with Saving Moses to see Night Care become a multiplied reality throughout all of Asia (Night care is the care & oversight for infants & toddlers during the evening hours while their moms are working in prostitution.  On this topic, please do not judge the importance of this project, based on the profession of these moms).  Nevertheless, many of these dreams & goals seem more than lofty – they seem impossible, when I only look at them.

However, when I look at these dreams in the context of my loving Heavenly Father, I sometimes feel like my dreams are too small, based on the immensity of my Father.  So in this conundrum, I find myself taking one day at a time, making a little progress here & there, but knowing in my heart that no dream is impossible with God, including yours!!

some timeless & unchanging encouragment

I’ve been praying about what to write about today & I feel strongly impressed to share some truths that never change.  These truths are about you.  You are:

  • significant and important – because of Who made you, you are a VIP.  Your title, achievements, awards, etc are not what make you significant & important, even though they can help you to feel this truth.  But remember that you are significant & important regardless of how you feel
  • valuable and highly treasured – for the simple reason that God loves you, this makes you valuable
  • you have purpose – there are MANY reasons for your existence & you have lots of assignments that God has put into your life.  From God’s perspective, all of the purposes & assignments in your life are important – none are insignificant nor trivial

Please be encouraged today by these timeless & unchanging truths & may they continually remind you of the Father’s immeasurable love for you that pervades the entirety of our lives 🙂

ever feel impatient?

Recently, I’ve been somewhat frustrated with one of my friends because they’ve made some very silly decisions that have had some fairly negative consequences.  I find myself being impatient with my friend & wanting them to change.  I’m trying to watch the words that I say to my friend, so that I don’t hurt their feelings due to my impatience.  So far, here’s my impatience insights:

  • if impatience is left unchecked, it can be very destructive
  • impatience isn’t only related to our words, but it also can affect our attitudes & actions, so that even if we don’t say anything, we must still remain vigilant against even its subtle expression
  • sometimes it helps to talk about how we feel, but its important to be responsible for our own feelings & not give someone else control of how we may feel or act
  • sometimes the best antidote to impatience is a slow, intentional & methodical application of patience
  • James 1:4 – let patience have her perfect work so that you may be mature & complete.  Give patience permission to work in your life 🙂

Love Is . . .

I’ve been thinking about what genuine love likes & acts like & I’m stealing some thoughts from The Five Love Languages about expressing genuine love. So here are some ideas about what love is. Love is:
*gifts – not only for Christmas & birthdays, but random gifts that are meaningful to the recipient
*affirmation – specific applause & recognition can be a hugely impactful experience for the one who hears such words
*touch – a gentle hug, a kind touch on the shoulder, a warm hand shake can be very affirming to a person who appreciates this expression of love
*time – for some folk, time is a deeply meaningful experience because it cannot ever be increased. It is the most finite resource that we have
*serving – helping others is an excellent way to give love for others.
The real meaning of love is more about the recipient than the person who is giving. In genuine love, the giver tries to be as present as possible & meaningful to the recipient.
What are some of your thoughts about genuine love?

variety doesn’t mean empty

My boys woke up fairly early this morning & we’ve been sitting together reading a little bit.  They were just discussing between them what we could make for breakfast, given what we’ve had over the last few days (french toast, bacon, pancakes, etc).  They’re thinking of making cinnamon toast & I’m pushing for scrambled eggs for a protein boost.  Nevertheless, there are many different options for today’s breakfast 🙂

The same is true for God’s provisions in our lives.  I’m learning that God’s provisions for me come in lots of different ways.  Here are some of the varieties of ways that God provides in our lives:

  • time (unexpected cancelled activities, something takes less time than expected)
  • wisdom (creative ideas, insights, solutions, etc)
  • energy (strength in what has been draining)
  • quiet & still (these can be very rejuvenating)
  • encouragement & direction (even in small amounts & with 1 step at a time)
  • God’s presence – for me, there’s nothing more sustaining than when I am with God

So if you’re in a season that seems short on supply, perhaps it might be an interesting exercise to reconsider the various ways that God does supply for us 🙂

a thorough loving

I had a really nice time this morning waking up my son – he was very snuggly & wanted to share a secret.  When I told him that I was listening, he said, “you first – you share a secret first & then I’ll tell you my secret.”  So I paused for a minute to think about what level of secret to share (secret ingredient in my pecan pie or a secret pain in my heart).  I decided to go with the deep option & shared something with him that is super close to my heart.  He assured me that my secret is safe with him.  After this, he also shared a deep secret with me & we had a very nice deep conversation.

This interaction has caused me to think about my relationship w God – I think He wants to more thoroughly love us by coming into the secrets we keep in our lives.  Indeed, when my son shared his secret with me, I felt lots closer to him.  With this experience, I’m even more convinced that God wants to be closer to us & one way that we cooperate with His desires is to be more vulnerable & transparent with Him.  We must know that He never rejects us – even in our worst state & when we are wholly deplorable to ourselves.  You are highly treasured & deeply valuable to your Creator

Calories & Consumption :)

While today is Thanksgiving in America & many of us will be consuming high volumes of calories in all kinds of different ways & at all times, I’m remembering that the fundamental purpose of eating is to provide energy. Ultimately, I eat so I can work, function & be productive.
Let’s remember in our high calorie consumption today that we must never neglect to feed our hearts. Indeed, an emaciated heart is unable to live out the purpose for which it was created. Heart food can include prayer, the Bible, spiritual fellowship, some solitude & pause. May your Thanksgiving be truly full of joy in all ways 🙂
