Unimportant, irrelevant, insignificant and altogether meaningless. Sometimes I have conversations and interactions with people where I try to figure out where we might have some common ground and find something about which we can both enjoy discussing. When I talk with my friends whose kids attend the same school with my kids, we often find the common ground related to school stuff. When I’m speaking in a church or at a conference and connecting with people in these environments, we often talk about God and the Bible. But not everyone wants to talk about school stuff, or Bible stuff, knitting, or how to get in better shape, snowboarding, or Soren Kierkegaard or God or prostitutes having babies that need safety and protection, . . . . We all have things that we are passionate about that aren’t interesting or meaningful to other people. But here’s the totally cool piece:
All of you is meaningful to God. God is altogether interested in your life and everything in which you’re interested. God has the capacity to be fully engaged, interested and participatory in every area and interest of your life! All of you is meaningful!!
There are lots of areas in my life that I’m trying to improve: fitness, cooking, relationships, ministry, leadership & more. If I’m not careful, all of this could be overwhelming. But this is something my dad would always say, “inch by inch, it’s a cinch but yard by yard it’s hard.”
So I’m making incremental changes & starting to see some improvements. I can tell that my health is getting better, my cooking has fewer burning torches, some relationships have been more stable & there are some other good things that are going on. So let’s keep our focus on God, remain thankful & keep growing inch by inch 🙂
I’m in the midst of trying to lose some weight that I’ve put on over the course of the last year – blech. So of course I’ve been doing the exercise & more healthy eating thing & thankfully, I’m slowly making progress, which is rewarding 😉
But here’s something that I’ve been thinking about: we can put short term rewards in front of us for helpful motivation, but lets think in terms of something more long term. For example, it helps when I put on my pants, that it’s not quite the same wrestling match – but the long term goal is that I’m more consistent w my exercise & disciplined w my eating.
Lets consider letting the short term rewards position us for more long term benefits, and play lots of basketball in the meantime ,)
My son told me that he ate half of a rolly polly yesterday – I think this was during recess, but I didn’t ask for too many details. For most of us Americans, this sounds pretty gross, but it’s my own fault because I introduced him to eating beetles and grasshoppers when we were in Cambodia last year. Clearly, he’s overcome the standard Amercian resistance to eating insects & now he has a wider range of protein options ,)
So perhaps we can learn from my son’s expanding dietary pallette and pray that God would instill in us a taste & hunger for spiritual things more than natural things. Just something to consider on this lovely Fall day 🙂
This has been a fairly crazy year for me with travel, particularly during the 1st half of the year. As a result, it has come to my attention that I’ve put on a few pounds (did you like how I suddenly got formal? smile). Thankfully, no one has made any overtly rude comments or observations, but I can most definitely tell a difference with my clothes. So I’m getting my rear in gear to see what great things can happen from endeavoring to get back into shape 🙂
In order to be more fit, to be stronger & more healthy, I have to put some work into these areas – a truth that can apply to every area in our lives. Discipline, effort, work & committment can have some very glorious results in our lives, particularly when we join with God’s grace & power working in our lives. Without some effort & engagement I can quickly get flabby – just a little food for thought ,)
Loving well can have lots of different expressions: taking someone for coffee, doing grocery shopping for a person, spending time listening, sharing about your thoughts / feelings, having someone over for dinner, giving therapeutic formula for starving babies, giving someone a kind word, staying positive and optimistic in a difficult season, giving a hug or a pat on the shoulder, encouraging someone about their talents or efforts, paying a bill for someone who’s struggling, . . . . .
I think there are a BOATLOAD of ways to love well and when we make it a priority, I think that we can all love well because of how we are so well loved by our heavenly Father 🙂

Last night I had some friends over for dinner & I really enjoyed making a nice dinner for everyone (I even tried some new recipes that weren’t too bad). As I sat & enjoyed the fellowship, my family & food, one of the things that I enjoyed the most was that our meal couldn’t be repaid.
This is my same experience with saving Moses – I get to give to babies & toddlers with a pure heart & no strings attached. It brings me great joy & happiness when I get to freely give & bless others. Somewhere it says that it’s more blessed to give than receive ,)
