hot topic: Gaza & the ceasefire

I’ve been watching the situation with Israel & Palestine over the last month & I was very happy to read this morning about the ceasefire and what seems to be the ramp down of the military conflict between Israel & Palestine.  If you have looked into any of the history of this area, you’ll quickly see that this area of the world has been unstable to varying degrees for millennia.  Regardless of which side of the conflict you sympathize, its good for everyone that they constructively work toward a peace that can be realisticlly achieved between these neighboring countries.

With that being said, I don’t see how you can be a neighboring country, endeavoring to build trust while concurrently telling your population that your neighbor is the enemy – both sides do this.  I also don’t see how you can build trust when an underlying tenant of your political existence is the obliteration of your neighboring country – there has to be mutual respect for mutual sovereignty.  Finally, you can’t build trust without first creating an environment for constructive conversation.

Let’s pray for peace in the middle East!

Hot Topic:  Israel, Palestine & Hamas

If you’ve been following the news of late, there’s been a very significant increase in the military activity between Israel & Palestine within the last several days.  Israel has mobilized troops and is currently carrying out ground operations into Palestine & Gaza.  There have been very noteworthy increases on both sides of fatalities and loss.  And there are many individuals who support Israel and many individuals who support Palestine.  No matter what “side” is your position, let’s pray for peace in Israel and Palestine.  The loss of lives, injuries and property destruction from this conflict is all extremely high, so let’s be sure to keep this area in our daily prayers!

hot topic: Israel, Gaza, Palestine & Hamas

If you’ve been watching the news of late, you’ve probably heard about the recent escalation of tension between Israel & Palestine.  Over the last month or so, the hostilities in this region have become increasingly deadly to the point that Israel is considering the use of ground forces to move into the Gaza strip.  Regardless of your political opinions or persuasions, let’s join together & pray for peace in this region.  Indeed, all of the Middle East seems to be in a state of tremendous upheaval & in desperate need of prayer.  Please join me with a few quick actions:

  1. pray that the leaders in Israel & Palestine will have wisdom
  2. pray for the general population to say “yes” to peace & “no” to violence
  3. pray that each person may have the grace & power to forgive others for the pain that they’re experiencing
  4. pass along this blog to your friends to increase the awareness & prayer level for this very strategic area in our world

hot topic: Hobby Lobby

Hobby_Lobby_-_Logo__stacked_

Christian for profit corporations in America have been holding their breath, waiting for the Supreme Court ruling on the Hobby Lobby case related to the Affordable Care Act & contraception.  This topic has been hotly contested saying that women’s reproductive rights have been infringed upon and others advocating that the government should not have the power to govern decisions of for profit organizations pertaining to the corporations religious beliefs, specifically related to contraception.

This is an interesting topic for me as I just returned from India to look at expanding nightcare with Saving Moses to our 2nd country.  I visited a few red light districts and learned that even though some sex workers have unionized and are putting pressure on the clients to use condoms, the individual sex worker is still largely at the mercy of her economic condition, being able to earn more money through unprotected sex rather than requiring her clients to wear this protection.  On the heels of trying to wrap my head around the daily survival efforts of sex workers in India, I’m home in the US and we are grappling with forcing private businesses to comply with government regulations that oppose their religious convictions.  We live in an interesting world and my take away on this, at this point isn’t very sophisticated nor intellectually engaging – my take away is that I want to genuinely love well 🙂

hot topic: Meriam Ibrahim

_75747908_75742756 I’ve been keeping up a little bit here & there about Meriam Ibrahim, a young woman in Sudan who was sentenced in May to hang for renouncing Islam, as she had married a Christian man.  Earlier this year, she delivered a baby while in prison, awaiting her execution.  Thankfully, the Sudanese government agreed to release Mrs Ibrahim and when she tried to fly out of Sudan yesterday, she was detained along with her husband and two children.  The Sudanese gov’t is saying that she doesn’t have the proper paperwork & it seems that no one has heard from her since being detained yesterday.

My point in bringing Mrs Ibrahim to your attention is to ask you to pray for her & her family – for protection, for favor & safety.  As a follower of Jesus, she’s  part of our family & it’s super important to keep each other in our prayers!

hot topic: world cup!!!

Yea baby!!!!  The US won their match against Ghana – congrats to the US team 🙂

One of the things that I love about soccer / football / futbol is how it is accessible to everyone.  Wherever I go around the world, I see evidence of this sport in some fashion or shape (wobbly goals from tree branches, balls made from tape and cut up tires, lines in the sand for field markers, etc).  I also love that almost anyone can play it, regardless of age, experience, gender, financial status, educational experience, etc. – I even recently put my name on a list to possibly play in some recreational league (no call yet).

In my thinking, Jesus is a little bit like soccer / football / futbol:

  • He plays well with others,
  • He is universally appealing,
  • He has the power to unify people to noble living &
  • He is relevant to all of us, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, educational background, financial status, experience, etc.

Happy World Cup & don’t forget the international coffee ,)

hot topic: Oregon school shooting

I was just looking up the news & saw that there’s been a school shooting at Reynolds High School in Oregon.  The situation at the high school has been stablized but not without bloodshed.  Understandably, the parents, students & community is shook up and probably in a state of shock.  Because I live in Denver, CO the city where the Columbine HS shooting happened, along with the shooting last fall at Arapahoe HS, my heart & prayers go out to the people at Reynolds HS, just outside of Portland, OR.  I understand what it feels like to live in a city that has had its fair share of school shootings and because of this, I want to encourage you to pray for the students, parents, teachers and administration.  The journey in front of this community is challenging and Jesus gives us the best hope in these kinds of situations and many more.  Let’s be praying for Reynolds HS!!
